Lo spettacolo utilizza il trattato di Seamus Heaney dei racconti folcloristici sul Re Sweeney come base per l’esplorazione teatrale. Sweeney Astray è la traduzione di Heaney di un epos irlandese medievale su un prode guerriero che è maledetto dal clero cristiano a trascorrere il resto della sua vita nelle sembianze di un uccello e costretto a vagabondare nella solitudine e nella pazzia. Lo spettacolo usa poca tecnica, sfruttando le voci, i corpi e le abilità musicali degli attori per creare tutti gli effetti. Il testo è stato selezionato dalle opere di Heaney, che include vari poemi di una tardiva collezione che si riferisce a Sweeney.

The piece uses Seamus Heaney’s treatment of the folk tale about King Sweeney as a basis for theatrical exploration. Sweeney Astray is Heaney’s translation of a medieval Irish epic about a proud warrior who is cursed by a Christian cleric to spend the rest of his life as a bird, wandering in loneliness and madness. The performance uses very little in terms of set and sound, utilizing the actors’ voices and bodies to create all of the effects, supplemented by the students’ musical abilities. The spoken text will be selected from Heaney’s work, which includes several poems that refer to Sweeney from a later collection.
