Vincitore di un premio Pulitzer, è lo spettacolo di un attore che mette in scena 36 personaggi, sul rapporto tra l´autore e il suo soggetto, Charlotte Von Mahlsdorf, un travestito della Germania dell’Est sopravissuto al regime nazista e comunista, a cui fu assegnata la medaglia d’onore dal ministero della cultura tedesco per i suo sforzi nel preservare mobili del periodo Gründerzeit nel suo museo sotterraneo. Lungo il corso dello spettacolo, Doug (personaggio del suo proprio spettacolo) scopre che la storia di Charlotte potrebbe essere offuscata dalla sua memoria poco affidabile - un personaggio suggerisce che Charlotte è autistica: “Le sue storie non sono bugie a priori, sono automedicazione”. La sua decisione finale è una bellissima metafora su una lezione che ha imparato da Charlotte, circa la preservazione dei mobili.

The play is a Pulitzer Prize winning one-man show that consists of 36 characters and is about the relationship between the playwright and his subject - Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, an East German transvestite who survived both the Nazi and Stasi regimes, and who was awarded the Medal of Honor from the German Cultural Ministry for her efforts to preserve furniture from the Gründerzeit period in her "underground" museum.  Through the course of the play, Doug (a character in his own play) discovers that Charlotte's story might be clouded by her less-than-reliable memory. One character suggests that Charlotte is autistic: "Her stories aren't lies, per se, they're self-medication." Doug struggles with "what to edit, and what to preserve."  His final decision is a beautiful metaphor of a lesson he learned from Charlotte about the preservation of furniture.
